Choosing the Right Camera

Installation of a video surveillance system begins with choosing the right camera or cameras for the job. If you have a location to where you cannot easily run a video cable then a wireless (perhaps even battery powered) camera might be just the thing.

Convenience is a big consideration. For example, if you want a camera to use as a baby monitor a powerpoint will normally be available in the child's room, but you may not want to run a video cable to the room where it will be monitored, or you may want to easily be able to move the viewing location - something that can be easily done with a wireless camera simply by moving the receiver to another television.

Security is also another important consideration. A wireless camera will be broadcasting your video signal to everyone with a suitable receiver within a near radius. Wired cameras are more secure.

The advantages of wireless cameras:

  • Can be conveniently installed in locations where wiring is difficult, if not impossible.
  • Can be moved to different locations easily, as often as you like.
  • Can be hidden inside a moving object like inside your clothing, cap, briefcase or handbag, on a radio controlled car, etc.

The disadvantages of wireless cameras:

  • Video stream may be disturbed or influenced by other moving objects or other strong radio frequencies.
  • Video/audio transmission is limited within the prescribed transmission range.

Overall, the video/audio signals from a wired camera are more stable than a wireless camera.
